Sixty Belgian kitesurfers will soon head to Madagascar to launch their kites. Not just any kite, but sixty identical limited edition kites.
The annual ten-day FOCUS Festival is organised by Wim Tellier, together with his son Yenno and Wildert Mestdagh. Wim already realised the art project FOCUS last year, then with the typical local sailboats, the piroques. Each sail was printed with a close-up of the iris of one of the partners, leading to a stunning image: a colourful armada of eyes on turquoise water, with a white beach as a backdrop.
This year, Wim is bundling his FOCUS project with Yenno and Wildert's kitesurfing festival. Together, they will literally organise the festival with the biggest entry ticket in the world: a kite or custom sail. This will undoubtedly produce unique images. As many as 60 kites will sail together with more than 100 FOCUS pirogues towards the village of Tsiandamba, where a two-day festival will take place.
Already last summer, a successful launch took place on the beach of Surfers Paradise in Knokke-Heist, where thirty kites filled the skies. That was a promising harbinger of what will soon be seen in Madagascar: sixty kites over a turquoise lagoon with warm, flat water and a pearly white beach, one of the most beautiful kite spots in the world.
The impact of FOCUS
The FOCUS Festival is more than a sporting event. Organisers Yenno Tellier and Wildert Mestdagh also want to give something back to the local population through their Belgian passion. That is why they founded Cwater vzw, a Belgian organisation, whose mission is to create unique experiences and bring pure drinking water to villages in Madagascar.
With this festival, they aim to donate two hundred thousand litres of potable water to the people of Tsiandamba. To achieve this, Cwater is donating 2,000 20-litre water bottles, each of which will be filled five times to reach their goal.
