Week of the Sea at Surfers Paradise!

From Friday 20 April to Sunday 6 May, the 22nd edition of the 'Week of the Sea' takes place. During this period, the Province of West Flanders wants to draw attention to experiencing nature at the coast, both on the beach, in the sea and in the dunes. This can be done in class or with the family by participating in one of the many activities spread over ten coastal municipalities. The slogan this year is 'ZandInZicht'. The message is to get to know the sea, the beach and the dunes in a playful way and to treat them with respect.

Activities 'Week of the Sea
This year, the general public can participate in some fifty activities on the coast. The Province selected 10 eye-catchers for families with children, including a family picnic in provincial domain Raversyde, a sand festival in Bredene and a sea village in Nieuwpoort. For primary education, some coastal visitor centres propose 10 beach activities that the teacher can supervise himself without much additional material.

At Surfers Paradise one can participate in 3 activities:

1 - On Sunday 28 April, Surfers Paradise celebrates "Lei Day", a Hawaiian holiday where everyone with a garland of flowers around their neck participates in a ceremony that takes place on the water. A "Lei" is a Hawaiian garland. 2 seasons ago Surfers Paradise organised this event for the first time in cooperation with Culture Knokke-Heist on the occasion of the Surf's UP exhibition in the Cultural Centre in Knokke-Heist. All participants were extremely enthusiastic so this will become an annual tradition, after all surfing has an important place in Knokke-Heist.
This year once again, all surfers are expected to set off with their surfboards at 16:00 and form a large circle on the sea a little further out. The master of ceremonies will say a few words after which all the flowers will be thrown into the air and everyone will proceed to the "big splash". In this way, all the surfers feel connected and bring an ode to the sea and all that lives in it, the waves, nature, and they hope to enter a good surfing year.
Surfers Paradise provides free wetsuit and surfboard for those without equipment so everyone is welcome.
Afterwards, everyone can enjoy live Dj tunes with Dj Red Rum and a real beach BBQ.
